West Palm Beach Jr. Academy began our butterfly garden under the leadership of Karen Jones as a 3rd and 4th Grade class project to engage students with hands-on learning in science, nature, and mathematics. Combined with the Latina Butterfly Garden Grant, local church members, staff, students, and several local businesses including Thrivent Financial and Home Depot donated resources to build the garden. In May 2019 the United States Department of the Interior Fish and Wildlife Service recognized our butterfly garden as the first recognized Pocket Refuge in the United States.
